Understanding Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS): Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment
Part 1: What is Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)?
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is a common hormonal disorder that affects women of reproductive age. It occurs when the ovaries produce an abnormal amount of androgens, which are male sex hormones that are usually present in small amounts in women.
One of the defining features of PCOS is the presence of multiple small, fluid-filled sacs (cysts) on the ovaries. However, not all women with PCOS have cysts, and not all ovarian cysts mean you have PCOS.
PCOS can disrupt the menstrual cycle, making it harder to get pregnant. Over time, it can also lead to other health issues like diabetes, heart disease, and endometrial cancer if not managed properly.
